Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
