Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
