Our Top Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Spot.

At first glance, Lux could seem closer to an arduous university quiz rather than the latest pop record by an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Divided into 4 separate parts and performed in 13 languages, this is a breathtaking symphonic opus investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical change, often through the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward here, supported by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a vast roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to avoid dry intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, and sole credit belonging to Rosalía. While this is not her first project to alchemize the past and the present, the scale are far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she's breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines clearly during the stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The track then segues into the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm of Lux is that you never exactly understand—nor want to know—where you will go next."

Nearly each song ends at a totally distinct place than how it began. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic style begins off dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves straddling the line of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to gather more and more infectious hooks while it spins upward. That trick gets echoed on another expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried gems that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
