Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
